Charles Ericson was a carpenter living in Swedish section of Manhattan. There were so many Ericson's that he changed his name to Smith. Charles decided he wanted to own a farm and bought one in Rockville, Connecticut. The farm was not too successful and he sold the farm and moved to Wethersfield. Here he became a builder and was known for building larger homes.
In 1910 census name was Carl E and he lived at 963 Castlehill avenue, Unionport (the Bronx).
In 1920 census Carl E lived at Tolland, Connecticut.
Carl married Maria H. Abrahamsen, daughter of Søren Abrahamsen and Gunhild Sorine Olson Jaabæk, in 1895. (Maria H. Abrahamsen was born about 1875 in Mandal, , Vest-Agder, Norway.)
