John was a fisherman in Hull all his adult life rising through the ranks to become a trawler skipper.

John married Kate Hall, daughter of William Henry Hall and Sarah Ann Adams, in Apr 1916. (Kate Hall was born on 11 Mar 1894 in Hull, Yorkshire, England and died on 30 Oct 1957.)
