General Notes:
From the Times 27 Jun 1839 James Dimes, the driver of cab No. 598, was fined £5 and costs for detaining some articles left in his vehicle by a passenger, and not delivering them at the office of the registrar. A lady named Rushworth hired the defendant's cab, and amongst the luggage which she had placed in it were two French parasols, which he omitted to take out of the cab when it arrived at its destination. The witness, however, recollected the number of the cab, and summoned him for the offence, when the waterman of the stand where the cab stood proved that the defendant admitted that he had concealed the parasols behind the seat when the lady got out. The defendant endeavoured to induce a belief that he intended to call on the lady and give up the articles, but being suddenly taken ill, he was prevented from doing so. The magistrate, on inflicting the above fine, remarked, that in all cases of this description, where property was left by mistake in vehicles, and not either restored to the owners, or taken to the registrar's office, he should put the full penalty upon those brought before him for the offence. 1841 coachman. 1861 cab driver.
James married Mary Ann Harris, daughter of William Harris and Unknown, on 1 Feb 1841 in St. Andrews, Holborn, London, England. (Mary Ann Harris was born in 1824 in Wapping, Essex, England.)
