Before 1844 James was bequeathed £100 and one third of the residue of the estate of Elizabeth Mercer.
1844 James father's will denies him a share of his father's estate as James owed him £600; money he lost in a business partnership with William Baldwin.
Will - 1 Nov 1877 Gentleman, left £3,000. Executors John Betham and Henry Robinson. They were to invest £1,000 of his money in public stock or funds to buy an annuity for his brother Frederick, during his life and then it was to go to Mary Betham. Lizzie and Mary Betham were to have £400 each as soon as possible. Household furniture and paersonal articles and residue to his executors.
