General Notes:
Doug as he was known, went to school in Crondall. On leaving school he became a baker at 'Irvings' next to the Fox and Hounds in Crookham. He then moved on again as a baker to work at Mills in Farnham. Doug joined the RAF in 1941. He served as a dispatch rider ar Kenley RAF station for one year. Doug then went to Algiers on 11th Nov 1942, serving at Maison Blanche Aerodrome. Returned home in October 1945, where he served as a dispatch rider at the Air Ministry in Whitehall. One of Dougs jobs was collecting the Nuremburg Trial reports from Blackbushe Aerodrome and delivering to the Ministry of Information in London. He was demobbed in September 1946. After marriage, Doug and Rene brought their family up in 5 Dovas Cottages, Well Road, Crondall, in a house they later called Old Timbers. For many years there was only an outside toilet. Doug spent many years working with his brother at British AIrcraft Corporation, Weybridge. After leaving BAC he become a workshop manager with Dorwin of Alton, a double glazing company. After a heart attack, Doug moved to the sales and surveys department, eventually beconing a company rep. After 13 years Doug retired. By then Doug and Rene, made their home at Woodlands Rise, Grange Estate, Church Crookham two doors from Doug's brother, George.
Walter married Irene Ellen Evelyn Coates, daughter of Albert Victor Coates and Florence Rose Cornish, on 10 Jan 1942 in Crondall, Hampshire, England.
