From the parish of St. Mary, Whitechapel in the County of Middlesex and the Metropolitan Police District.
As to the removal of Sarah Dimes, singlewoman, aged 31 years and her 3 illegitimate children, namely Elizabeth aged 8 years, Sophia aged 3 years and Jane aged 7 months.
The above are now residing at Whitechapel workhouse and are receiving relief from the said parish.
An order of one of the magistrates of the Police Courts - - - has been obtained for their removal to your parish of St Mary, Lambeth as their last place of legal settlement. The following are the grounds of the said removal.
The said pauper Sarah Dimes is the lawful child of James and Mary Dimes who were married at the parish church of St Mary Woolnoth in the city of London in or about the year 1811.
That in or about the year 1817 James Dimes the father of the said pauper Sarah Dimes hired and rented a separate and distinct dwelling house situate and being in the Kennington Rd in the parish of St Mary, Lambeth in the County of Surrey and known by the sign of the Plough and Harrow at the rent of £80 per annum and rented and occupied the same for 2 years and upwards paying the rent for the whole of the time and he was also rated to the poor and other parish rates during such his occupancy and paid the said rates in respect of the same.
That about 25 years ago the said pauper Sarah Dimes with her mother was acknowledged by the Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of St Mary, Lambeth by having been relieved by them for 3 years as one of their own poor and while the said Sarah Dimes was resident out of their parish.
That the pauper Sarah Dimes has never done any act whereby to gain a settlement in her own right.
That the said pauper is 31 years of age and has never been married.
That on the 21st day of January 1841 the said pauper was delivered of an illegitimate child called Elizabeth Dimes at a house situate and being No.18 Princes St. in the Hamlet of Mile End New Town in the County of Middlesex.
That on the 11th day of February 1845 the said pauper was delivered of an illegitimate child since called Sophia Dimes at a house situate and being No. 21 Princes St. in the hamlet - - (etc)
That on the 1st day of June 1848 the said pauper was delivered of an illegitimate child since called Jane Dimes at a house situate and being in Kings Arms Court in the parish of St Mary, Whitechapel in the County of Middlesex.
And also that the said Sarah Dimes with her said 3 illegitimate children - - - - are now inhabiting in the parish of St Mary, Whitechapel and before and at the time of making of the said order were chargeable to St Mary, Lambeth.
Take notice that unless Notice of Appeal against the said order be received by us within 21 days - - - the said pauper will be removed to your parish of St Mary, Lambeth

Certificate of marriage provided.
I find Dimes rated for the Plough and Harrow from Nov. 1821 to Nov. 1822 inclusive and that no subsequent settlement was gained. Mr Barnett.
Notes:
Never went to service till 17 years of age then to Mrs Pearce, 19 Georges? Rd, New Kent Rd. 2nd down on right. Was there 12 months and had £6.
Mother Sarah Loftus lives at 11 Lambeth St, Whitechapel. Her husband is a shoemaker.

Sarah Loftus was examined by a magistrate of Thames Police at Stepney on 31 Jan 1849 and she repeats the information in her daughter's examination.

30 March 1849. Sarah Dimes and 3 children discharged with 15 shillings.

Sarah Dimes age 32 ex Gales Gardens never was married, has been cohabiting with a man named John Spawl by whom she has 3 children, (children's births recounted as before) About 1 year ago was passed from Whitechapel to St Mary, Lambeth by virtue of her father James Dimes having kept the Plough and Arrow (sic) Public House opposite Newington Church, St Mary, Lambeth, was accepted by Lambeth and admitted into their House and remained there about one week and has been in again since that and stayed 3 months.
