General Notes:
NATHANIEL DIMES (1759-1828), who married Elizabeth Cooper at Hartney Wintney in 1784, threatened to become a charge on the parish in the winter of 1788. He was examined by the Overseers, who decided that he, his wife and three children, Ann, Thomas and John, were the responsibility of Alton and should be sent there. Alton contested the decision and the case was heard at the Quarter Sessions in Winchester in the spring of 1789 when it was "respited". The case came up again at the Midsummer Sessions when the court upheld the decision. Crondall parish was awarded 40s costs and the overseers claimed £1 7s expenses. However, the baptisms of Nathaniel's three children were all entered on the paupers register of Crondall - James in 1790, Daniel in 1792 and Sarah in 1794. Four more children followed to complete the family - Jane born in 1796, Nathaniel in 1799, George in 1802 and Charles in 1804.
By 1806/7 Nathaniel was back on the list of ratepayers as the owner of a small property with a rateable value of £1 12s 0d and was still there until the lists cease in 1810-1811.
Four of Nathaniel's children stayed in Crondall and reared large families and we can follow the descendants of these in the 19th century. They are Thomas, Daniel George and Charles.
Nathaniel married Elizabeth Cooper, daughter of Matthew Cooper and Unknown, on 15 Apr 1784 in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, England. (Elizabeth Cooper was born in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, England and died in 1826 in Crondall, Hampshire, England.)
