When Robert was 5 he lived at Upper Trapes, an area at the top of Beaver's Hill, Crondall Lane Farnham. It was a snowy day, and Roberts grandmother was ill. Roberts mother was waiting for the doctor to arrive, so Robert walked to school with some older girls. Half way down the hill, near the hop fields, Robert was told to wait on the sloping bank while the girls went to talk to their friends. Robert ran into the road and was hit by a convoy of tanks coming down the hill.
