A Shearman by trade.
In 1570 William (Demes) inherited the tools of his Uncle William from Southampton. William probably moved to Southampton between 1570 and 1584 to work either for his aunt Agnes. He is mentioned in Southampton records in 1584 as living in the Roods area (where his aunt lived).
In 1584 the muster shows him having a bow, a sheaf of arrows, a gun and a morion head.
In 1594/5 William paid Lay Subsidy Tax at Guildford of 3 pounds.
In 1596 William was on the St. Mary, Guildford Muster List.
William is also mentioned in the will of clothier George Huntington of Wonersh who owned three messuages (houses) in Shalford and Guildford, one of which was occupied by William and his family.
