William Dymes

  General Notes:

William's younger son William stayed in Guildford. He was apprenticed to Peter Quenill, a butcher, for seven years. William married twice, his first wife being Joan, who bore him five children, Michael, who was buried the day after his baptism in 1635, Elizabeth, born a year later who married Edward Brinkwell, a butcher, in November 1658, William born in 1638 who died aged fifteen, another Michael and lastly, Thomas born in 1643 of whom we shall hear more. Joan died in 1644. The register records the burial on 27^th July of 'The wife of William Dimes and a maide and a childe.' William must have remarried shortly afterwards as was common for widowers with young children, as his new wife Margaret gave birth to a daughter Sarah sixteen months later, but Sarah died aged seventeen months. The couple then had a son William in June 1648 and another daughter Sarah in March 1650/1. William prospered and was admitted as a Freeman of Guildford in 1655. Three years later William was taken ill. He died, and was buried on 22nd of October just a few days before the wedding of his daughter Elizabeth. On the day before his death he made his will instructing that she be paid £50 on her wedding day. His other three living children Thomas, William and Sarah were to have £40 each when they reached twenty one. 'All his goods chattels and debts to and owing', he left to his wife. He then appointed John Thomson, his sister Petronell's husband, whom he called 'brother', and Henry Parson, 'kinsman', to help Margaret execute the will. William appears to have been reasonably well off, however there is no mention of houses or land.
