William Dimes

  General Notes:

This William, the son of William and Margaret, baptised at St. Mary's in Guildford, started the tradition which has lasted to modern times of naming the first son William. His father died when he was ten years old, at which time he was bequeathed £40 which he would inherit when he was twenty one. Then his mother died when he was sixteen and he inherited the houses she had bought and shared the residue of her estate with his sister Sarah. Like his step-brother he learned the butchery trade and as was usual at the time left getting married until in his thirties. His wife was called Frances but where and when they were married is not known. During the period of the Commonwealth following the Civil war very few church registers were maintained. However, they had a son whom they called William who was baptised at St. Mary's in November 1686, but William the father, died in June 1689 leaving young William an only child. No will has been found so he may have died suddenly.

William married Frances. (Frances was buried in 1721.)
