bullet  General Notes:

Changed his surname from Dymes to Dimes at time of marriage.
William moved from Guildford to London and was possibly apprenticed to someone there. We know from another marriage licence that by 1741 when he was 27 he was living in St. Clement Dane's parish. The Bishop of London granted him a licence to marry Mary Preston, a spinster aged 30. The licence was granted on 8th April and they were married the following day. Their son William was born the following February and baptised at St. Clement Dane but he failed to thrive and died the following month. William, like his brother, enjoyed only a short marriage as he too died in May 1743. The Rate books for St. Clement Dane tell us that they lived at Clare Street, Clements Inn passage, by the law courts, and Mary continued to live there at least into the mid 1760s. In 1777she was one of two principal legatees of her cousin Margaret Vertue of Brownlow Street, St. Giles parish. Later that year she took out an insurance policy with Sun Fire Insurance Company on her household goods, clothes and plate to the value of £200 in the brick house in Brownlow Street owned by W. Harman, gilder. She was well off and she made sure to write her will, which was done in 1782. She apportioned all her belongings among her many friends including the family of her husband's second cousin William Dimes of Vauxhall, who received £50. His wife Elizabeth received a silk brown braided gown, sable tippet and two aprons. Their daughter Ann was bequeathed a large mahogany tea board, a complete case of tea china, a tea jar with silver top and a case of silver teaspoons. All was distributed after Mary's death in 1788.
