bullet  General Notes:

Thomas and Ruth's elder son Thomas was a butcher like his father. He married Ann Knobee of Alton in May 1709 at the parish church of East Worldham, Hanpshire, which adjoins Alton and over the next eleven years they baptised seven sons at St. Mary's, Guildford; Thomas in 1710, John in 1711, William in 1713, Richard in 1714, Daniel in 1717, James in 1718 and Charles in 1720, who died less than a month later. A deed from the Court of Fines held by Surrey History Centre dated May 1710 named Thomas Dimes the younger, butcher, in a case brought by Jeffery Truelove and his wife concerning the ownership of land at Shalford. This suggests a family link to the Thomas who died in Shalford in 1665. The land included two messuages (houses), seven acres of arable land and three closes (fields) of meadow ground, in all about fourteen acres in the common fields and parish of Shalford. Thomas featured in another property deed in 1724, about a messuage, stable, gate and garden 'now in the occupation of Thomas Dimes, butcher'. It was in the parish of St. Mary, Guildford and was described as 'adjoining the Blackhorse on the east and abutting on the High street on the North and a messuage of Laurence Ledger on the South and West.' Using a contemporary map of Guildford we can place this property at the Shambles, the traditional name for the area where butchers plied their trade. Thomas had presumably been apprenticed to his father and in 1720 he took an apprentice to work for him. This was Gilbert Garrett whose father paid a fee of £10. Presumably about five years later he took his eldest son Thomas as apprentice. Other sons were in turn found apprenticeships but in other trades. In 1731 Richard was apprenticed to Oswin Sutton, a tailor of Epsom, for seven years for a consideration of £6 and two years later, Daniel was apprenticed to Benjamin Howe, cordwainer (shoemaker) of Guildford for £10. Thomas died in July 1739 without making a will, so his widow applied to the authorities for a grant of administration to deal with his estate. However, she too died shortly after, in November 1740, not having completed the task, and the grant was transferred to their son John, now the senior member of the family as his brother Thomas had also died in February 1739/40 between the deaths of his parents. It was a devastating few months for this family.
