General Notes:
John and Esther's surviving child, Charles Andrew, attended Mount Cook Boys School in Wellington from1888 to 1895. Then, like his father, he became a plumber. In 1904 he married Lizzie Small who had been born in Lyttelton, Christchurch, in July 1884. They had two children, Charles William and Agnes Rose, both born on 1905 in Wanganui. In May that year Charles and Lizzie had their house broken into by a young hawker named Iliff and had a ring, a bangle and an ivory matchbox stolen. A few years later the Gonville Fire Brigade was formed and at their first AGM in April 1910, fireman Charles Dimes was elected foreman of No.1 Company. Lizzie too was active in the community. She played tennis at Gonville Tennis club, being elected on to the committee in 1910. She was also a member of the Gonville Baptist Church and was reported to be concerned with the refreshments at the welcome to the new Pastor there in 1913. Probably the whole family worshipped there. In 1912 Charles, together with a Mr Jones, bought a business at 144A Victoria Avenue in Wanganui, previously owned by and known as Arnold and Moon. They were licensed sanitary plumbers, gas and hot water fitters and tinsmiths. They ran the business until September 1919 when they sold it to a James Ogilvie. By 1918 the family was living at Hatrick Street, Wanganui. Charles then belonged to the Wanganui Old Navals' Association which sounds similar to the organisation to which his father had belonged and he spent that Good Friday taking part in their shooting match. In 1928, like his father, Charles Andrew divorced his first wife, Lizzie, and then married a second time in 1931. Hester Maria Sadler was born in 1890 in Matakana which is 25 miles North of Auckland and she died in 1980 aged ninety. Lizzie Dimes returned to South Island and lived in Governor's Bay, Christchurch. In 1940 she was an active member of the Governor's Bay \endash Allandale Branch of the Womens Division of the Farmers Union and the December meeting was held at her house. At the July meeting in 1941at Mrs Grieg's house, she won a competition for winding a skein of wool and the members enjoyed a demonstration of pine needle work. She died in 1960. Charles died on 28th January 1962, at which time he was living at 5 Carlton Gore Road, Newmarket, Auckland, and was cremated two days later at Purewa. Hester was also cremated at Purewa after her death on 1st December 1980.
