In 1892 Charles and Sarah had taken over the license of The White House in Tilehurst. It was recorded as a Beer House at the time. The building is still standing and being run as a public house. It has had a couple of name changes since Charles and Sarah were there. It traded as the Dragon and Elephant and is now trading under the name of The Victoria. Apparently the local bus company still refer to the stop outside as the White House. Charles passed away suddenly in January 1897. The Reading Mercury newspaper of Saturday 30th January 1897 recorded his death as:
SUDDEN DEATH - On Monday, Mr Charles Crocker, of the "White House", died very suddenly. On Sunday he was apparently quite well, and up to early on Monday morning, no change was noticeable. He passed away, in the presence of his wife, at 5.10. Death was due to a weakness of the heart's action. The deceased, who was in his 41st year, was born at Mattingley. For five years he had conducted the "White House", and had won the respect of all who knew him. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. Much sympathy is felt with Mrs. Crocker. The funeral took place on Thursday 28th January at St. Michael's Church, Tilehurst.
Then on Saturday 6th February 1897 the following personal insertion was included: Mrs. Crocker and sons desire to return their heartfelt thanks to all those friends who have shown so much sympathy and kindness to them during their recent heavy bereavement.
