1861 Census an Under Gardener
On 18 June 1863 he began employment with the London and South Western Railway Company at Nine Elms. Engaged first as a porter, he then became a brakeman. On 28 January 1873 he was dismissed for being concerned with a collision but he was re-appointed a month later and promoted to guard the following November at 31 shillings a week. In 1866 Albert and Elizabeth lived at 5 Radnor Terrace, South Lambeth. In 1870 they were at 38 Corruna Rd. Battersea, sharing a house with another railway family. From there they moved to 59 Southville, just off the Wandsworth Rd. In October 1892 Albert had an accident at work which resulted in his right foot being amputated. He was off work for over a year, resuming duties on 15 March 1894, starting with 3 trips to Clapham Junction and back daily. He retired on 1 July 1910 on a pension of 11s 9d per week. His record was not free from blemishes; he had once been reduced a shilling, once suspended, 3 times fined and 9 times cautioned for various offences. After retiring they left Southville, where they had been for over 30 years and they moved to 7 Long Reach, Horsley. Ernest and Ada moved with them.

Albert married Elizabeth Munden, daughter of Matthew Munden and Eliza West, on 3 Feb 1866 in Walditch, Bridport. (Elizabeth Munden was born on 3 Feb 1841 in Bridport, Dorset, England and died on 6 Mar 1930 in West Horsley, Sussex, England.)
