George worked on the railway. As a younger man he worked as ticket collector and porter at Vauxhall station on the London and South Western Railway. In 1897 George and another ticket collector attempted to rescue a man who had fallen on the line. They were amost mown down themselves by the next train passing through. Their efforts were praised by the coroner. Later in life George worked at Clapham Common Underground station. In the 1911 George was a guard.
